Ten

Standing up and stunned, Doug gave himself another minute to believe what had just happened. Relief, regret, joy, and embarrassment took over. Geneva sat still, staring at the floor, and frowning. Damn. He’d disappointed her.

Sure as rain, he’d just wrecked his first serious chances with the most beguiling woman he’d ever met in Coventry. His every move was met from her with equal fervor, gentleness, and building heat.

God, he wanted her—as much as she cared to give him tonight. He was one sweet kiss away from knowing her breasts, unveiling her rhythms and sighs, and maybe being lucky enough to claim her heart.

But memory flashes about the accident ambushed him. How damn inconvenient! They knocked him off his clear and present course with Geneva and seared his sensibilities. Swiftly, his world changed as the memory fragments rose like dragons and dropped into place. His mind filled again with the details, jumbled as they were.

He was riding King of Hearts again, bursting ahead with Thistle players Stu Mills and Danny Froth pounding in and out around him, doing their jobs. Standing in the stirrups, he was forging on, eager for the goal points in the fourth chukker. He gripped the reins, in control of his mount, as the crowd’s cheers rang in his ears.

Only another ten yards to go for victory—then another, fresh memory slammed him. A sharp blip, but it was out of sequence. Now he was pulling himself up in the saddle at the beginning of the fourth chukker. Then another dream-like memory plowed through. From the far end of the field, he rushed the ball and hit it.

The next blip of memory jumped ahead. He recalled meeting a hefty curb on the near side of his mount. He never saw it coming. He was looking elsewhere. Next, his helpless feeling as King of Hearts began to buckle. He and his favorite, trusted pony were going down. Finally, the sickening “crack” emitted from his pony and a scream that no polo player ever wanted to hear filled his ears. Doug felt himself dropping into polo Hell...

As suddenly as the jumbled memories had charged into Doug’s head, they stopped, leaving him reeling and breathing heavily. What had just come through was mixed up, and moments were missing.

He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to will them to the surface. But no more came. Still, tragic or not, memories from part of his missing life had just returned home to stay. He instantly felt more together, giving him a good reason to rejoice. He remembered more than he had a half hour ago.

Yet, this miracle had stolen his focus while Geneva was still lying beneath him. The timing was absolutely terrible. He wanted to apologize. But how could she understand? He had been close to ushering her to the stars and suddenly left her wanting him.

As he looked at her, her patience baffled him. He guessed she was giving him time to collect himself. But it couldn’t be a pretty moment for her, losing herself in bliss, then nada.
